Laneway Music Festival
Exhibition Design, Sourcing
2013
At Luchetti Krelle, I had the opportunity to work with one of the sponsors of Sydney's 2013 Laneway Music Festival, Toko Japanese Restaurant. I managed the design, fit-out, and installation for both the interior and outdoor spaces for the music event located in Sydney College of the Arts.
Concept
The concept of Japanese Laneway is the result of marrying the theme of our sponsor (Toko Japanese restaurant) with the name of the festival (Laneway).
Indoor Entertainment Area
The entertainment area is styled in collaboration with curated artists; prints of Julian Meagher's Eastern Asian tattoo paintings are paired with selected graduation art pieces by students of the college.
To mimic the view of the stacked cable lines commonly found in Japanese laneway, we install a series of
$2.80
Daiso Japanese banners and string them on black ropes. These banners lower the spatial height of the colonial building, providing a sense intimacy for the users.
Lanterns
Lanterns become a recurring theme in this fit-out. In high traffic areas, lanterns strung on cables decorate the sky.
In the retreat areas where VIP seating is designed to be an ethereal escapade from the hyped up-energy of the festival, lanterns are installed as close to the ceiling as possible, creating pools of dim lights 'in the indoor sky'. For seating, we use materials commonly found in laneways, such as milk crates covered in carton boxes.
My Role
To fulfil the design concept, I selected materials that are design-complementary and cost-effective, coordinated between suppliers and site staff, and formulated the project budget.
I also managed the preparation of graphic artworks, lighting fixture, and styling accessories, in order to ensure a successful set up on the day of the festival.
